Charroux

Charroux, one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", was a fortified town and a major trading centre in the Middle Ages.

The evocative names of the streets still bear witness to this great activity: the streets of the henhouse, the rope factory, the tanners, the lime kilns, etc.

Charroux has preserved a number of features from this period, including sculpted stone facades from the 15th to 18th centuries, a remarkably well-preserved 14th-century timber-framed and corbelled house and an exceptional number of wells.
